Clothing Conundrum

For a City of this size and commitment to sustainability, Raleigh has shockingly few options for recycling textiles.

How Well Do Schools Teach History And Civics Education?

Much fuss is made about the education system in the US. You have parents on one side saying that schools are liberal indoctrination centers that teach our kids to hate this country. On the other side of the coin, you have people who think the curriculum isn’t doing enough to prepare our kids for future careers like STEM and computer careers. Usually, both sides of the equation can agree there is way too much “teaching to the test” (aka preparing for standardized tests), then educating the student. Well, I’ve got some stats that are terrifying.

What Is Ranked Choice Voting? Is It Even Legal?

Per Wikipedia, ranked-choice voting is a system in which voters can rank the candidates on their ballot in order of preference. For example, if there are seven candidates on their ballot they would rank the candidates in order from 1-7. There are multiple ways that the ballots can be counted, and a winner tallied.

The Complicated Role of Government In Education.

It is in black and white on the Department of Education’s website that it is the role of state and local governments to determine curriculum and other factors pertaining to education in their jurisdictions. This makes sense, as what is works in Alaska won’t be the same as what works in Delaware. However, does this hands-off approach come with a price?

Want to end political parties? End the Electoral College.

As the parties become more and more polarized, the middle ground shrinks. While Democrats may hold an edge in party registration numbers, they are outpaced by those with no party affiliation at all. This trend has been growing for years, showing the public’s growing dissatisfaction with both major political parties.

Is There A War On Intellectualism?

I’m working on a book that is full of quirky anecdotal stories from my childhood. One of them is how my Mom tried to make sure I surrounded myself with people who matched my intelligence level. She never wanted me to be ashamed of the intellectual gifts I had been blessed with. And she also didn’t want me hanging out with anyone who might derail me from a college education.

How Not To Fall Victim To Misinformation

If you weren’t aware, we have a presidential election coming up in November. We’re also in the middle of a pandemic. In the current world we live in, it’s becoming harder to tell fact from fiction every day. It’s gotten to the point where social media giant Twitter has to put a fact check on the tweets of our world leaders. How are we as consumers of news supposedly to tell fact from fiction when our leaders don’t even get it right?

Can Economic Liberalism And Political Liberalism Exist Separately?

The term liberalism is tossed about quite liberally (pun intended) to cover a wide range of topics. There are individuals who are socially liberal, economically liberal, classical liberals, liberal feminists, and many other kinds. In American politics, all forms of liberalism tend to be grouped together. The conventional thought is that if you believe in one style of liberalism, you believe in all styles of liberalism. However, the pressing question becomes, is that actually true? Can someone only hold liberal views on one topic? Can the forms of liberalism exist separately? Or must they always exist together in a society or government?
